Thank you for your interest in the Center for Materials for Information Technology (MINT) at the University of Alabama. We are a multidisciplinary research program focusing on new materials for advanced data storage. A major emphasis is on materials for magnetic heads and media, key components in high performance information storage systems. Morre than 30 faculty from seven academic programs including Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, and Physics work together to provide students with a broad training in materials performed in a team environment. Research carried out in cooperation with industrial partners prepares students for exciting careers in a rapidly expanding field.
The mission of the Center is to perform world-class research, educate students, and serve as a resource and communication channel for the information storage industry. Research programs range from the most fundamental studies of spintronic materials and phenomena to the technologies of information storage systems. Basic science, supported by strong materials preparation and characterization facilities, is focused on future opportunities for materials breakthroughs. Promising results are transferred to our industry partners through collaborative research programs. An infrastructure of exchange visits and visitors, seminars, workshops, industrial internships, and research reviews facilitate a dynamic approach for information growth.
Support for the Center is provided by the University, federal grants, and industrial sponsors. In 1994, 1998, and again in 2002, the Center was selected by the National Science Foundation to be one of approximately 25 Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers in the United States. Additional federal support has been obtained from DOC, DOD, DOE, EPA, EPSCoR, and NSF. Industrial sponsors include Seagate, Western Digital, Fujitsu, IBM, and Hitachi Maxell. MINT is also an affiliate of the Information Storage Industry Consortium (INSIC).
